Japan, Ink: Inside the Manga Industrial Complex

My first reaction was, ‘what’s this in wired?’ followed by ‘is manga that mainstream in US now?’ (or North America if you prefer)

It’s inevitable as even half the children’s cartoon shows are of Japanese origin, I suppose.  What I found really interesting was half way through when most of the ‘introduction’ was done. Copyright laws and doujinshi ( sorta like fan-fics, in manga form ). The difference between “write only” media and “read and write” media  Lawrence Lessig mentions.

It’s really interesting concept yet I am not sure how that would apply to, say, music or any other medium where people do not have a hand in creation of any sort. I can see that doujinshi can link the pros and fans by existing somewhere inbetween while even expanding the fan base but does that mean we will see more of remixed mp3 or what not?

Though I must admit there seem to be more of such on Youtube where people ignore self-preservation and  shame.

Anyway, it’s a fairly good read.
