House Renovation - Day 32

January 16th, 2007

So much happened. All rooms are painted as of now, 2nd and 3rd floor were done by Jan 1 somehow…though we have been working on main floor and basement since then. Unfortunately the camera was lost all these time so I couldn’t capture the process. Ah well.

Moving in on Jan. 1 while still renovating was reall difficult, especially since ShaoWai, Leyla, Michelle and I were still on full steam well into the new years doing painting all over the house. After a brief not too comfortable sleep, thanks to everyone who helped out–Andrew, HyunSe, HyunYup, Shaowai, ChangHee–moving was done rather quickly though the aftermess was brutal.

Main floor is more or less done although there are still piles of garbage bags containing this and that…and several boxes, a dirty ladder and a rather too large coat hanger in the middle of the room.

I think Shaowai and Leyla came often to help out with the reno while Richard dropped in to give an additional hand with the basement flooring. Good thing ShaoWai had done hardwood as my memory of installing laminated floor was getting fudge. (self note: gotta hammer horizontally just above the ground!…and just get the $20 kit for wooden block and edge tool next time!)

One more room to go…one third of it, actually. Although finishing this room won’t mean it’s the end of it all. After flooring is done tomorrow, we hope to finish the trims with molding for both rooms…and start moving all my ‘junk’ there as Michelle says so we can get settled. Too many books, she says. Hah!

Anyway, to-do list somehow always stays more or less the same…long:

Replace Doors for 3rd floor and basement (this weekend?)
Hallway and stairs in the basement (…this week or next month)
Replace windows (late Jan if weather holds…)
Air duct cleaning
Replace furnace (before cleaning the air duct?)
Paint the kitchen
Front and Back entrance wooden platforms
Garage

and clean out all the junk in the front, back and in the hallway…but then, this list will get longer with cleaning to-do so I will stop here.

I will know the reno is done when:

  • I can walk without shoes
  • All rooms feel warm
  • Washroom feels warm!
  • I can play NWN2 for 8 hours consecutively without feeling guilty

Though last bit may have to wait until I finish my novel. And study.

Jin out.
